What is Pisco?

The national spirit of Peru, pisco, is a favorite throughout South America. According to legend, pisco dates back to the 16th century.

What kind of alcohol is pisco?

Pisco is technically a young brandy made by distilling freshly fermented musts and juices of Peruvian grapes. Because both are created from grapes, some compare it to Grappa. Because of its comparable herbaceous and nearly earthy flavors, several people compare it to Tequila. The truth is that because Pisco has its own distinct personality, comparisons to other alcoholic beverages frequently fail. Distinct Pisco will have different qualities because it is manufactured from several grape varietals.
There are many theories as to how the name of this peculiar brandy came to be. Some claim that it was derived from the Quechuan word pisqu, which was the name of the bird found in the Peruvian region of the Ica valley. It might also have been named for the port city of Pisco, which is close to Nazca and where the Brandy was carried.
